The Importance of pH and Your Water

The Importance of pH and Your Water

Pure water’s pH level is neutral, but this can change depending on what the water is traveling through before it reaches your home. If you remember from science class, the pH scale has two different sides: acid and base with a
neutral 7 separating them in the middle.

The pH scale range

The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. Any measurements less than 7 are considered acidic, and greater than 7 is basic (or alkaline). Also, how far away a pH level is from 7 increases quickly. Each full increment is ten times more or less than the number before it. So, a pH of 4 is ten times more acidic than a pH of 5 and 100 times more acidic than a pH of 6.

What does that mean for your water?

Water with a low (acidic) pH level acts like it’s hungry and therefore eats away at your plumbing while it travels to your faucets, leaving your pipes thin and prone to pin-hole leaks. The metals stripped from the pipe are deposited
on your fixtures and turn to blue/green stains as they are exposed to air.
Water with a high (basic) pH level acts the opposite way. It carries way too much stuff to eat and starts to lighten its load as it travels to your faucets. This means it’s causing build-up in your pipes and restricting the water flow into your home. Your local water treatment professional can easily test the pH of your water supply.

How can I get my water back to neutral?

Ion Pro acid neutralizerIf your water is acidic, it’s important to let your water supply company. If you have a private well, neutralizing filters can be installed to get rid of acidic water. Like turning on hot water to warm up a bath that is too cold, pH levels can be balanced evenly with the right solution. Our CareClear Pro® offers an acid-neutralizing filter filled with Calcite, natural calcium carbonate media. When water passes through the media, it slowly dissolves the Calcite to feed the hungry acidic levels before entering your home.

The media does need to be refilled occasionally to replenish what is being used to correct the water. With the lighter-colored tank, you can easily see the current level of media inside or set up a worry-free schedule with your dealer to ensure your home is always protected.

Never worry about green stains on your sinks again. Check your pH levels and bring your water back to neutral with a neutralizing filter. WaterCare dealers make it easy by offering free water testing and estimates!
